Mimatsu Shokudou
A trip to Tsuwano allows you to see a different side of Japan. Iwami is far off the beaten track, the nearest big city is Hiroshima, but it can be accessed via Hagi-Iwami airport from Tokyo, JR buses from Hiroshima, JR trains, and even an old steam train.
Mimatsu Shokudou is located next to Yayoi Shrine. This Japanese restaurant is said to be the oldest Japanese restaurant in Tsuwano, having opened in 1931. In this restaurant, you can try soba noodles (the thin brown noodles, made from buckwheat) and udon noodles (the thick white noodles, made from wheat). Mimatsu restaurant especially recommends its inarizushi, so you must try it! Inarizushi is a kind of sushi made of aburaage, or deep-fried tofu, stuffed with rice. The inarizushi here is different color from usual. It's darker, with a stonger flavour.
