Shogenji Temple (Iwami 33 Temple Pilgrimage)
If you enjoy visiting temples, Iwami has a 33 temple pilgrimage route that you can follow. Shogenji Temple is one of those temples. It takes about 26 minutes by bus from Ohda JR station. Shogenji Temple is known as one of the “Pure Land Sect” in Japan.and it was established by the second magistrate Tangonokami Takemura in 1601.
Iwami Silver Mine was a territory controlled directly by the Edo government and prospered as a major industrial area under Takemura. The temple was government’s family temple where government supervised Iwami Silver Mine. In addition, this temple enshrines a Christian Jizo and a Maria Kannon, which were prohibited due to closed country.
