Ryougonji Temple (Iwami 33 Temple Pilgrimage)
Ryougonji Temple (written 楞厳寺 in Japanese) is the 27th on the Iwami 33 Temple Pilgrimage. It’s located in Yunotsu Town, Oda City. It is said that the Ryougonji Temple was originally known as the Jurisprudence Sect, and that in 813, Kobo-Daishi converted to the Shingon sect during his tours in various countries. It’s an old temple that was rebuilt in 1239.
At this temple, you can experience making prayer breads. This is an experience that we can’t do usually, so it should be very interesting.
The following is the procedure for visiting a Japanese temple. We visit the temple to make wishes and prayers for happiness and to express our daily gratitude to god. Please do it when you visit Ryougonji Temple.
1. At the gate of the temple, put your palms together and take a bow.
2. Wash your hands with water to purify them.
3. In the main hall, we offer incense sticks and give a money offering, and chant sutras.
