Imodaikan Museum (Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine Museum)
The Imodaikan Museum (Iwami Ginzan Silvermine Museum) exhibits historical records, mine records and mineral specimens. The building was originally constructed in 1902 as a public office.
The place name Iwami Ginzan is found on early European maps as one of the important silver mines worldwide. The silver mine became a bridge between Asia and Europe and promoted economic and cultural exchange, and this museum explains that history.
The museum name "Imodaikan" refers to a man called Ido Hezaemon Masaakira, who introduced and promoted the cultivation of sweet potatoes (Imo) as a hardy plant for people suffering from hunger and saved many lives.
