Hanzake Nature Museum of Mizuho
Hanzake Nature Museum of Mizuho, is in Ohnan-cho Ochi-gun, Shimane prefecture, Japan. It is dedicated to the giant salamander.
“Hanzake” means Japanese giant salamander. The Japanese giant salamander can grow to 5 feet (1.5 m) in length and weigh 55 pounds (25 kg). It is the third-largest amphibian in the world. In some regions in the past, Japanese giant salamanders were hunted as a source of food. Now, it is prohibited. The Japanese giant salamander is designated as a special natural treasure in Japan, so local people say “Hanzake” affectionately in Ohnan-cho.
In this facility, you can see live Japanese giant salamanders from eggs to young to older animals, and experience the smell of the Japanese giant salamander.
You can also dress up as a Japanese giant salamander.
