Iwami silver mine
Designated a world heritage site in 2007, this sleepy little village still retains its charm. Wander through its streets, admiring the traditional architecture, and stop for coffee and silver souvenirs in some of the charming stores converted from old dwellings. You can also tour the mine, and don't miss the visitors centre for an explanation of why this little backwater was one of the most important areas in all of Japan several centuries ago. Follow up with a trip to Yunotsu onsen, the hot spring village on the coast, and the port from which the silver was exported all over the world.
There is a useful Walking Map in English and plenty of tourist information in English. Be sure to pick them up at the World Heritage Center. You can also contact volunteer guides for a free English Tour. iwami-ginzan-walking-map
